IMPUDENT MISREPRESENTATION OF OPPOSITION PRESS. THE QUESTION OF IMMIGRATION {By Telegraph,—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. In an interview with a Post representative to-day, the Hon. W. F. Massey stated that, in connection with the Government immigration policy, a statement hacj been repeatedly made by tlio Opposition and by ono Or two Opposition rtietobersj to the effect that it was the in- j tclltion of the Government. to bring | 25,000 immigrants annually to New Zealand. 4 That statement, said Mr Massey, was an impudent misrepresentation of what he said when speaking to a press representative som« time ago.- What he really said was that the country should he gaining 25,000 people each year by immigration ; that is by arrivails over departures, and tliat New Zealand could absorb that number. "And I believe we could," added Mr Massey, "always on the understanding that the pet)pio coming here were of the right class. But that is a different thing to saying that the Government ir.tended to introduce 2-y,OOO immigrants annually. The Government hag no intention of doing anything of the sort; but will continue to policy of encouraging men of the farming class, and suitable young people for domestic service."
