CONSTERNATION IN ATHENS. STREETS BLACK WITH PEOPLE. (Received March 20, 8.30 a.m.) l'Jth March. The sensation, caused by the news of the assassination of King George, was indescribable. The capital -ja in a state of consternation. The streets were still full of people at midnight. The square, environs of the palace, and ministries, and the newspaper offices were black with people. All refuse to believe.that a Greek' was capable of assassinating a beloved king.

(Received Last Night 5.5. o'clock.) SALONIKA, March 20. Scbinas, the assassin, was shabbily dressed in a blouse. He wa« waiting at th.? corner of a side street. The two bullets fired from an old fashioned revolver, resembling a horse pistol, struck the King. Schinas attempted to shoot Colonel Frankoudos, whose revolver missed Are. The King fell on a table outside a shop. The shop keeper lifted him and the soldiers running up carried the King in their anus to the hospital in the vicinity. He was unconscious when Prince Nicholas arrived. The King died in big son's arms. The body was wrapped i» the Greek flair and embalmed. The officers in the evening carried, the body on a stretcher to the palace Prince Nicholas, theh igli dignitaries of .state and the clergy following with heads tiHflpvered. THE ASSASSIN A NOTORIOUS DRUNKARD. Schinas is a notorious drunkard, and half witted degenerate. He is half Greek and half Slav, and recently delivered socialistic harangues. He lived'by begging and''was half/starved. Ho subsisted chiefly on milk. The examining magistrate asked the reason for the crime, and Schinas replied that he had to die soon anyway and wished to die famous.

Prince Constantine has been acclaimed as King. It has been resolved to erect a natioi%l monument to King George. World wide condolences have been received. THE KING'S FORTUNE. LONDON, March 20. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) It is reported that King George of Greece left £4,000,000, in investments in London, Palis and Vienna, TURKISH ABHORENCE (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) CONSTANTINOPLE March 20. The newspapers express abhorence at the assassination, and pay warm tributes to the late King. REPLY TO MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY. {By Telegraph- — Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. 'The following telegrams have been received by the Governor in reference to the -assassination of King George of Greece, —"I am deeply touched by and much appreciate the message of sympathy which yon have sent me, on behalf of the Government and people of Ncav Zealand. Please express my most sincere thangs to them.'" signed George K; and "I send my grateful thanks to you and your Government and the people of New Zealand for kind sympathy 1 ' .signed Alexandra. Further; His Majesty the King commands the observance of Court mourning for 28 days, for his late Majesty the King George of Greece, but it i« his Majesty 1 s wish functions arranged in connection with the visit of H.M.S. N)ew Zealand should proceed notwithstanding.
