HURRICANE ON THE ISLAND. (By Telegrajjh.~Pre.ix Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. Cable news from Suva, dated March 18th, and received March 18th at 9.05 p. states that yesterday the barometrical readings indicated a. climatic disturbance. This morning at fire o'clock the glass fell steadily and at ( isevfrn the Government signal .gun gave warnings of an approaching hurricane. At nine the gale was 'blowing full force, finally dying away at eleven. The soa.p works, were totally destroyed, and the Union Company's unfinished hotel was damaged to ©xent of £SOO. Other local damage was slight. 'Communication from the outer centres was interrupted. At Rewa Valley the sugar cane and banana crop? were devastated for miles. Labasa 'and Taviuni are safe. The s.s, Tofua rode the gale in the harbour. The s.s. Marama, having sheltered, reached port safely. The Tofua is for Auckland, and the Marama for Vancouver .
