DOG STEALING.
LONDON February 20. The methods of the dog thief were revealed at Highgate Police Court in a case in wlniclv a man named Harry Saxton was charged with stealing from «omo person 'unknown -an Irish terrier, and further with assaulting "Detective-Sergeant Grosse. and Detective Seymour while in,the execution of their duty. Detective-Sergeant Grcw-pe said in consequence of many complaints with regard to dog steal in g, he kept observations on the prisoner in the Broadway, Crouch End, in company with Detective Seymour. Prisoner was iseen to take, 'something from his Docket, rub it on Ms hand and down his trouser leg. He stood still for a few minutes and soon lie was surrounded by about six mongrel dogs. Two minutes later a good looking terrier came up to him. Prisoner patted ■him on the hack and then slipped a lead on/ ihis coMar. Witness went up to him and he kicked the dog on the back and it went away yelping. It was known tliat the niisoner was a dog thief, and the two detectives went to arrest him. but he became very violent. Fie ibit witness's hand and •attacked Seymour and kicked him on the chest and ng.ht hand. Private persons came to their assistance and prisoner struggled furiously. The aimibulanco was sent for, and with-the united efforts of six persons he was got into it but broke the straps an(l commenced to kick out again and entered a private house. After a tiV.e •ho was overpowered and taken to tl'e station. On being charged there he said. "Tf I had not been .so roughly handled T should have told you where the doge are." On being (searched a piece of liver saturated with oungent smelling liquid wa* found d him, and He 'sa.i'd. "That is. what T give to my blackbird to make him si"s\" The magistrate, in ordering a remand, referred to the seriousness of the case, and hirrhly commended the two officers if.or their work.
