Mr Frank Hodge, formerly of tho Age staff, hut now of the Hawke's Bay Herald, is at present on a visit to Masterton. According to Hie World, a.weekly, society paper, Lord Islington will be the next Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, in the event of the retirement otf Lord Aberdeen, - Mr J. P. Luke has definitely decided to become a candidate for the Mayoralty cf Wellington. It is expected that he and Mr D. McLaren will be the only two candidates. The iNew Zealand High Commissioner (Hon T. Mackenzie) entertained. the Hon. James Allen, New Zealand's Minister of Defence, at luncheon. Sir W. C. Buchanan, M.P., of Wairarapa, was among the guests. A Christchurch telegram states that the Rev. Canon Carrington has been appointed Bean of Ohristchurch in place of Rev. Dean Harper, who lias resigned. The appointment takes effect from April 10th. Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P., has been appointed by the .Government to the position of Chairman of the Board of Management for Thames Deep Levels. Mr A. Bruce, the other -Government representative, has been re-appointed.

Mr 0. S. Smith, stationmaster at Mercer, in the Auckland district,• will succeed Mr G. Falla as stationmaster at Master ton. Mr Falla. leaves Mas-ter-ton for InveroargilL on the 31st inst. , It is stated that Mr Justice Sim will shortly .retire from the Arbitration Court work, an additional Judge being required for Sup em 9 Court duties. Judge Sim's successor has not been announced, but .in welT-informed circles it is believed that Mr Hoslrings, K. 0., of Ohristohurch, has first-option on the appointment. The death is announced by cable f,f Viscount Tredegar, at the age of eighty-three years. The deceased was a member of the Hous6 ef Conimoiis from 1858 to 1575. He sei-ved in tho Crimean.War, and rode with his regiment in the Balaclava Charge, in ISoi. Mr Dobie, st-atiewnmster at Tnv-v----cargill, who is.being-succeeded by Miv G. Falla, of Mnstert-on, was formerly stationmaster-at Woodville. Mr Dobio is being promoted to Dunedin. The following appointments have been made bv the Wellington Board of Education: Paliiatua District HigW' Scibool, secondary assistant, Miss M. Reese; iGartonton jDfeitrict High' School, secondary assistant, Miss O. Haddrell; Makomako, sole teacher, Miss E. Pinkey; Putara, >sole teacher, Miss H Wiesner; Coonoor, sole teacher, Mr F. Stafford; Featherston, assistant, Miss M. Burbueh; Ballance, assistant, Miss F. M. Chatwin ; Belvedere, assistant. Miss L, Robinson; Mount Cook Infant, assistant, Miss Feist.
