THE FEDERAL CAPITAL.
Yesterday was a red-letter day in the history of the Commonwealth of Australia. Tho christening of the capita] city of "Canberra" marks the advent of a new era in the colonisation of the federated States. 'Tho establishment of the capital in. tho inter'.)r of the Continent ha« (much to recommend it. First of all it will temd to divert the population from the large cities to the country. Then it w:'!i remove all -feelings of jealousy owr the seat of Government. And last, but not lea.st, (it will mean that important State documents will be cure from destruction by the shells from foreign war vessels. In this latter connection, Now Zealand statesmen .have not shown that sagacity which might be expected of them. Had they the future of the nation thoroughly at heart they would establish the seat of Government in the Wairarapa, where there would he less danger of destruction hy earthquakes and a greater security against foreign invasion than there is at present.
