HON. J. McGOWEN.
The announcement that the Hon. J. McGoweti, Premier of New South Wales, intends retiring from active politics, i£ highly significant at the present juncture". A.State election is impending, and it is quite upon the cards that the Labour .Ministry, headed by Mr McGowen, will be sent about its business. The announcement of the Premier's intended retirement will mitigate the shock that will come to his party on the day of reckoning. In the meantime, it is fair to .say that Mr McGowen is not by my means the least distinguished of Australian Labour Premiers. That ho should rise -from the humble position of boiler-maker to the most exalted office in the 'State, is a tribute to 'bis energy and sagacity. During his lengthy career in Parliament he has done a great deal for Labour. His services in connection with the eight-hour movement alone are sufficient to perpetuate bis memory. Labour, however, has not a retentive memory. It soon forgets. .It squeezes the political juice from o politician, and then thirow>s him, as it would ttfo skin of an orange, into the gutter.
