THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
Tt is inconceivable that there are over 450 burgesses in Masterton who desire to see the trade of the town paralysed for tho sake of gratifying a foolish whim. And yet the petition presented to the Masterton Borough Council on Tuesday evening, praying that a poll be taken on the half-holiday question, would indicate that there are fully this number who are prepared to sacrifice the interests of the town for their own selfish purpose. It may be that many of those who .signed the petition are anxious only for an expression of public opinion on the subject, and have no intention of voting for the diversion of trade to other townships. However, the challenge has been issued', and it remains for every person having the best interests of the community at heart to strive by every legitimate means to defeat the aims of those who would introduce an. exceedingly dangerous experiment. The poll will bo taken in n. few weeks' time, and it behoves townspeople to .get busy.
