Mountains, situated to the north of the Pamir in Turkestan. Tlie.object of the expedition, is to discover the deposits of a certain new metal said to he found there, and to enquire into its properties. The new metal is described as a kind of brownish paste of considerable specific weight. In contact with acid it creates an intense cold without the formation of any gas. Another property ascribed to it is that of causing any .substance which comes into contac with it to lose a certain amount (if weight. The properties of tlii - extraordinary metal are too remarkable to admit of acceptance until corroborative testimony is received.
