(To the Editor.) Amongst the various reasons .Put forward ill favour of the shops of Masterton observing the Saturday half-holiday, is the. Ko-ealled "benefit to sport." As a member of several local sporting chilis, let me state emphatically that none of these bodies are agitating for the proposed change. In fact, it has yet to be shown where the benefit to sport is to come in, supposing the proposed change in the hall-holiday was effected in Masterton and not in tho surrounding towns. Before the Saturday half-holidav supporters come before , : tho Ipubl'ic ns benefactors to sport. let them getany. oi. the various sports clubs to pass a resolution in favour of their proposition. If a universal halfholiday is the best, why not make it on Wednesday or Thursday? The same benefits would surely result, whilst very lew of tho commercial inconveniences would be encountered. As neither of these ideals are. likely to bo immediately realised, why not both parties join forces and remove a very silly condition that exists in regard to the mid-week holiday, j refer to the practice of some towns choosing Thursday, aiid some Wednesday. If the Government would make it compulsory for all towns choosing
