CLUTCHING AT STRAWS.

The remnant of the great and omniscient "Liberal" Party—the party that placed the interests of the State first and those of itself nowhere —is clutching at every straw to save itself from being overwhelmed by the tide of public opinion. But the straws are brittle things, that .break at the very touch. So wo find that the attempt to damage the Government over a perfectly legitimate land transaction at Stratford has proved abortive. The "Liberal" press declared that a sum of £I2OO had been paid to a. former member of the House, who is a supporter of the Government, for a section of land valued for .rating purposes at £3OO. It now transpires that one of the partners in the firm that owned the land is a. vigorous opponent of the Government ; that tho sum paid is at least £2OO below the- amount that was asked ; that more than one section was acquired; that the land was taken by proclamation ; and that tho Government has -secured a really good bar-

"ain. And now the country is awaiting the next glorious discovery of the discredited party.
