SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE
BRANCH FORMED IN MAB- - A well-attended meeting wa,s held in Murray's Hall, Masterton, last evening for the purpose of forming a branch of the N.Z. Sports Protection League. His .Worship the Mayor presided, and introduced Mr Paape, organising secretary of the League, to the meeting, which was attended by a large number of sportsmen, the gathering being representative of all branches of sport throughout ihe Waira.rapa.
Mr Paape spoke at length on the aims and objects of the League, giving a very comprehensive address regarding the League's aims and objects, and the work done since its inception. Mr Paape, made it clear that while the League strongly favoured horse racing, the main object was to foster all branches of legitimate and. healthy sport. The League, while in no way defiant, was out to protect sport from the hostility and opposition of the extremists, who, as far as racing was concerned, tended to make a monopoly of it. He hop-
Ed that a branch, would be formed in Masterton, and take, up the work that was being done in other parts. Mr Paape explained that the League was a non-political organisation, but at the same time any candidate for Parliamentary'honours who favoured healthy and legitimate sport, would receive the support of the members of the League. At the conclusion of Mr Paape's address, Mr C. F. Yallance moved: "That a branch of the League be formed in Masterton." MriM. O'Connell seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The following officers were then elected: Patron: Mr C. F. Yallance. President: Mr D. K. Logan. Vicepresidents: Messrs M. C. O'Connell, W. S. Dickson, G. Sellar, F. C. Turnor (Eketahuna), A. P. Whatman and J. Whittaker. Committee: A. Sclanders, J. Bradbury, H. Saville-Smith, D. MoLachlan and W. Redmond. Secretary : J. Ivelliher. On'the motion of Mr Paape a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding and to Messrs C. F. Yallance, D. K. Logan and A.
