DISTRICT NEWS

KAIPAUORO. The weather throughout the past week has been unusually lioh, ami during the last few days the atmosphere has been rendered oppressive by the smoke from brtsh, fires. Rain is now threatening. A rather distressing form of illness —English cholera—is at present prevalent here. It attacks both children and adults, and a number of persons have been quite prostrated by it. The school re-opened after the summer vacation on February 3rd. The usual monthly meeting of the .school committee was held on the evening of the same day, there being present A. Fullmer,(Chairman), C. Burton, (Soorefciry). .). McCann, J. 'MeAnulty and A. Palmer. Correspondence, from the Fducaiinu Board re the .school water .supply was read, and accounts were pas.-ed lor payment. It was decided to hold the annual picnic on Wednesday, February l-'th. the children to canvass for subscriptions toward the >amo. All arrangements for this event for the dance which is to follow in | the evening are now well forward, j and if the weather proves favourable a pleasant outing should, result. Quite a number of people train th: h district purpose attending the Mastertcn Shew on the I.9th. insL. On Saturday evening a. euchre tournament, arranged by Me.-dames Palmer and Parker, in aid of the hall funds, took place in the hall. There was a good attendance and keen interest was evinced in ihe games which were eventually won by Kirs Krickson and Mr T. Parsons. Dancing, which followed was kept up until midnight. The many friends of Mr A. Palmer will regret'to hear that he is at present suffering from a.n attack of pleurisy. Mr Harold lion all is at present on a visit' to his parents in the Carterton district. The- danger of allowing young boys r.o carry firearms was amply demonstrated' here a fortnight ago when a bullet from a pea rifle crashed through a window of Mr 0. Falkner's residence grazing Mrs Fullmer's arm and narrowly missing Mr l?alienor's little son. Tim pea rifle is now in the. possession, of the police, and J its owner is a little sadder, but i probably a little- wiser.
