A very satisfactory report lias reached Masterton in reference to the Mangaone Oilwells. Accounts amounting to £1384- 18s were passed for payment at yesterday's meeting of the Masterton Cbuntv Council.

The pictures taken of the swimming sports at tlio Park on Anniversary Day, will lie shown at Messrs Thompson-Payne's Picture Theatre tc-night. The Government has purehayod a block of between 700 and SOO acres at Tariki, in Taranaki. It is anticipated that the land will cut into at least' seventy dairy farms, and it will be thrown open for settlement as soon as the necessary surveys' can be made. It is' really not too much to say that those who have been privileged to witness the rehearsal of those who are taking part i.n- the performance on Thursday, 27th inst., at the Mas-t-erton Town Hall, have been greatly surprised. The presentation, therefore, of the brilliant comedy of Charles Dance ("Delicate Ground") will certainly please all who attend ; while the recitations are so numerous and so strikingly varied that they must suit every taste. The scene from the "Merchant of Venice" will be staged in its entirety. The dressey are rich in colour, correct in design, and will of themselves, form a lovely colour scheme. But the acting of tho junior pupils will challenge comparison with experienced exponents of tho players' art. The whole entertainment gives promise of great success.

The finance committee of the Masterton County Council met yesterday imoriiing, Cr. Kebbell being in the chair. The treasurer reported as follows: —General fund account, dr, £5335 14s 8d; local bodies loa.ii. account, cr, £520 17; accounts dr balance, £4185 Us 5d ; receipts yince January 14th, £IB2O 17s lid. Accounts armounting to £1384 18s were recommended for payment. It was decided that tho Eketahuna County Council be asked to supply the Mastei'ton. County ■engineer- with a copy of their heavy traffic by-law, and that tthat officer be directed, when preparing contracts for metal repairs, which necessitate the material being hauled over roads tinder the jurisdiction of the Eketahuna County Council, to see that provision is made in such contracts for the observance of the requirements of the bylaws in question. Archer) stated that improvements had been made in a number of the Borough streets. During tho month of January 2085 sac-Ivy of coke were sold from the .Masterton Gas Works, and for the same period 9419 gallons of tar were disposed of. Tho Uorough I'oundkeepei- reported at tho monthly meeting of the -Masterton Borough Council, that twentylive horses and nine cattle were impounded during the month of Januarv. Fees received amounted • to £5 13s 6d. Six gas cookers and fittings were sold from the blaster ton Gay Department during the past month, making a total of seventy for tho current year. The value of cookers sold amounted to £72 7s Sd. Co the motion of Or. O'Leary, itwas decided at the monthly meeting cf the Masterton Borough Council, I that a water-inspector he temporarily appointed, to see that the by-laws I relating to the use of water in town gardens be strictly enforced. Messrs Cadsby and Bartlett, of Masterton, who have secured two of the contracts for metalling on the I Masterton-Pougaroa Road, had the misfortune to lose two valuable horses, the animals having fallen into a creek and been drowned.

During the month of January eight now hooks were received at the Masterton Municipal Library, making a total in the library of 4085. During the month 1365 books' were lent. Tlio subwribers totalled 299,' and the subscriptions received amounted to £2 17s 6d. The Masterton Cycle Club" held the ,y3Cond road race of the season last evning, the course being a distance of nine miles. The race was keenly contested, and fairly fast time was registered. The result was as follows;—J.'Clarke (80sec) 1, V. Bockman (1205.0 c) 2. C. Yaller (120 sec) 3. Time, 23min lo.vac. H. Flaws registered the fastest time, covering, the distance in 22£-min. A meeting of the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society was held last night in Murray's Hall. There was a good attendance of members, and it was decided en the recommendation of the Selection Committee to produce the comic opera, "The .Geisha." The lirst rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, 4th March.

Letters were received at the-.meet-in- of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council vesterday morning, from Messrs J. Boustead and Gill, asking that the sum of £35 out of the general rates for the .current year from the properties belonging to two settlers and Mr I. Pol be expended in metalling some 20 chains of the Moroa Road, between the main road and the bridge over tlio Ihuraua stream. It was decided "that the committee recommends the Council to direct that a reply be sent, pointing out that the total amount of general rates on- the properties mentioned for the current year is £39 18s 3d ; that from this sum has to be deducted the pro rata contribution towards* tlio general administration in the county, including hospital and charitable aid demands; that the balance is barely sufficient to carry out effective road maintenance, and that the Council is unable to undertake naw work of any extent out of its ordinary revenue subsidised bv the settlers interested."
