PAHIATUA—AKITIO SHOW
ANNUAL GATHERING. (Bij Our Special Reporter.) The annual show of tlie Pahiatua and Akitio A. and P. Association was held 011 tho showgrounds, Pahiatua, yesterday. The weather was fair daring the day, although in the morn- j ing rain fell heavily throughout the district, and prevented quite a, number of country people from attending. "The grounds looked at their best, and the attendance was a considerable improvement upon that of last year. The variours competitions filled ;well, and there was keen rivalry an the different sections. The cattle section was represented by come very fine \ animals, the judge giving it sis his opinion that some of the animals competing would hold their own in the best company in the? Dominion. The sheep classes filled well, and sev.eral of the- prize-winners represented a very good class of animal. The ' chief honours in this section went to Mr 0. Avery, who had entered ! / rome fine sheep. The fat sheep 1 | classes deserve special mention, as the J j animals competing in this section | were an exceptionally lino lot, and.j would compare more than favourably ' / with anything in the Dominion. The ' dairy cattle w6re on tho whole a, very good Jot, and the judge had some trouble in deciding upon the winner j of the various sections., Honours inn the dairy classes were fairly evenly divided between Messrs. 11. H. ' Hughes, M. O'Oonner <uid M. Alpass, ' who each Showed some very fine ani- J mals. In the draught horse classes Mr S. Bolton and Mr O Avery divided honours, both exhibitors showing some high-class horses, which would | hold their own in better company than was pitted against' them at Pahiatua. j In the jumping competitions Mr G. j Laing's Rosy Morn was the principal ■ winner, annexing the maiden.and open 'hunter's competitions from a rather weak class. Rosy Morn jumped ex- \ eeptionally well, and in beating such ' a proved "lepper",as Betrayer made I quite a iname for .heiiself, and leads.! one to expect even" better things of her. Taking the show from fkist to last, it must be considered an unquali- 1 fied success, and had it not been for 1 the unpropitious weather in the morning, a record attendance would have added to the success of. the. gathering. • As it was the Society Jiave reason to feel satisfied with the , response made' by breeders and exhbitors and the public generally, and. in the next year or two it may be* that the Pahiatua slhqw, will- hold -ifej. own ,» 'with gatherings of more importance "! in the eyes of the farming, world; A word of praise is due to Mr J. A. Walsh, the Society's secretary, who worked hard to make the gathering ; the success it'deserves to be. and f - u | same may be said of all. the official who spared no pains in carrying out j i their various and arduous duties.
