SPEECH BY LABOUR M.P. WHY THE STRIKE FAILS. (Received Last Nigh't, 9.55 o'clock.) LONDON, January 30. Mr G. H. Roberts, Labour member for Nonvidi, speaking at the Labour Conference, challenged' the view that political action was futile, and that industrialism was the only method of realising the workers' aims. If, ho said, neither political action nor a strike policy realised expectations, it was due to the lack of working-class adhesion and enthusiasm. When, a popular franchise was secured, the people could master the State. He viewed compulsory arbitration with misgiving, but the integrity of contracts should be maintained except under great provocation. Witih united action, he said, the nationalisation of the mines and railways was as easily practicable as was the transference ' of the telephones to the State. j
