ARNST AND BARRY
A CHALLENGE ISSUED. PEARCE OR ARNST. (Received Last Night, 11.5 o'clock; 1 ) SYDNEY, January 23. Dick Arnst has deposited £IOO with the Sydney Sun newspaper, and has challenged Barry to row this year for the world's championship for £SOO aside. Arnst claims that Pearce's challenge has lapsed, owing to the articles being unsigned within three months after the lodging of the deposit. Pearce also did not renew his challenge niter the expiration of the three months, and Arnst therefore demands the first race with Barry. ■ Arnst is willing to meet Pearce for £SOO or les.« aside in twelve weeks. Pearce could meet •Barry in October or let Arnst go it he wins. Arnst's backer offers Pearce £IOO towards expenses if lie beats Arnst. Pearce states emphatically that he leaves for England on February 12th, and will not row anyone until he has met-Barryv ■ ' . •
