FIRE ON THE RANGES

THE- MAUNGATERERE VALLEY' ABLAZE. The (ire on the Tarama ranges, which has been burning for some considerable time, took a fresh io-r-o of life on Monday afternoon, "Alien a heavy gale changed its direction to the south-west. The whole of the g ly up the Maungaterere was soon -ablaze, and considerable damage wan done to some of *>ettlers' properties. On Miller's property the lire was perhaps tho fiercest, and his place has been very badly charred. The fire lias gone through his bush, and practically the whole of the gra.ss on his section has been burned. H:s sheep have had a very warm time, and going over tho land Mr Miller found some forty dead, all huddled up together. They had possibly been blinded with the d-'rse smoke and ashes, had flustered together and then succumbed. The bridge on the Maungaterere Valley road was burned out on Sunday afternoon. Messrs Hohson, Raines, McLennan 'and T. Reid all have felt the effects of tho fire. Altogether the settlers on the Carrington estate at the West Taratahi end and those of the Maungaterere Valley have had a very trying time, and what with sore, eyes and sleepless ni'rhts they will not be sorry when rain corrie-i to relieve their distress So far IJI.O fire has not encroached 011 to the flats.—News.
