NEW MOTOR SPIRIT
ISENZOb I'HEBA-IiATION 'lO BE PLACED UN THE MARKET. LO.NDON, Dee. G. "The problem of our national liquid fuel supply lias become an ext renieh serious one, ami demands the closest attention." This Was how -Mr B. W. A- Brewer, the fuel expert and consulting engineer. of Piccadilly, described the situation which has arisen in consequence of the enormous increase in the price of petrol, to a press representative yesterday, when ho made the important stati.'me.n,t; that 'a, 'company is about to be •registered to produce an alternative fuel for use in motor en-
gines. "The .situation in which we find ourselves, of being dependent on foreign i .supplies of fuel, which have gone up to almost prohibitive prices, and would be nearly, if not completely, cut off in the event of war, has been viewed with., alarm for some time," said Mr Brewer, "but the announce- . lvieiit in Jast week's cables that a great motor -shipping company had been forme*] under the. directorship of Sir Marcus -Samuel shows that the day is fast approaching when we >shall be oven mere di'-pende.nt on our petixi] supply than we are already. "Already the pinch of the high price of petrol is being felt by motor ■users, and we are threatened by another strike among the. taxi-drivers, ■who are "finding it impossible to buy their supplies of spirit at reasonable prices. Few people realise how >de- ! pendent we have become on petrol, not only to .supply power for locomotion but for other purpose* a,s wall, and it is imperative that we slnild ■find some .means of maintaining our supply in the event of the foreign supply failing at any time. "A company is about to be registered for the purpose, of producing 'a motor spiirit which will bo largely composed of homo produced benzol. "Great quantities of benzol are already 1 being produced in this country, and elsewhere. "Tho now fuel has Ix?en exhaust.ive.lv » tested, and found to be odorless and ■smokeless, giving quite a.s good results as petrol "and costing 25 per cent, less than tho current price of petrol spirit. It would be difficult to | overestimate the importance of this (discovery, which will mean, if its use becomes trencral. that we diall require only a- fraction of our present octroi snpnlv, while our own benzol industry will increase by leaps and bounds."
