OBITUARY
HON JOHN BRYCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Last Night, The Hon John Bryee, at one time a notable figure in New Zealand politics, died to-day. [The late Hon John Bryce was born in England. He arrived in New Zealand, when quite young. in the year 1840. He joined the cavalry volunteers as lieutenant in Wangatmi during Titokowaru's war, in which he rendered invaluable service. Ho was elected M.H.R. for Wanganui in 1866, 1871 and 1881. He subsequently represented Waitotara from 1881 to 1887; Waipa in 1890; and Waikato in 1891. He was Native Minister in the Hall Cabinet from 1879 to 1881. He resigned from the Ministry in 1881 on a disagreement with, his colleagues regarding the action to be taken against Te Whiti. He rejoined the Cabinet later, and led an ' expedition of constabulary and volunteers. against Parihaka, which ■was occupied on November sth. 1881, Te Whiti, Tohu and Hiroki being arrested. In the year 1882 he carried the West Coast Peace Preservation Act, providing for the imprisonment of Te Whiti and Tolm during the Queen's pleasure, and also passed the Amnesty Bill, in granting free pardon Te Kooti. He held the office of Nn'ive Minister and Minister of Defence in year 1881-82, and was. He resigned in consequence of a vote of censure, for using in debate certain expressions reflecting on the Premier's conduct.] • . ,
