OPENS AT NELSON

NELSON, Last Night. The nineteenth General Synod oi the Anglican Church opened liere tolayy.all the members of the archy of New Zealand, Melanesia and Fiji being present, besides forty-three clerical and liiy Synodsmen. - A civic welcome was accorded! in the morning, ,aud the afternoon pitting was occupied by the Primate s address . -v , "•' Bishop Neville referred to the loss the' Church had fe-astained by the resignations of ■ Bishops Neligan, >\alr .is, and Mules. It liad. however, been enriched by a call to two 'of the most prominent members of the clergy in the Archdiocose of Melbourne. The Primate dealt at length with the constitutional position of the Church, foreign missions, •and "Bible in Schools. In the latter nection he-commented upon-the :.fact that they had in operation* mearlj; all, the leading Christian ' denominations, in' 'itself' a -creat step" towards ' theideal for which they must labour unceasingly. He expressed sympathy with the Welsh 'Clmfch in the trials through which it was passing. Referring to the uprising of the oppressed peoples in South-Eastei'p Europe, the Primate said their hearts must be gladdened by the belief that the Mohammedan woe was passing away. He referred: to the moveme-nt for promoting understanding and intercourse between the Anglican a-.nd Eastern Orthodox -Churches.
