NEWSPAPERS AND LOCAL BODIES.
Mr G. V. Pearce, M.P., has ventured the opinion" that the n illi, lieity c: .small counties in the Dominion is due to the establishment of small country newspapers. With due <ic.-'e*ence io the opinion of the member for Paitea, we join issue with him on tliis point. Our experience, which extends over thirty odd years, is that the establishment of country newspapers is largely the result of the multiplicity of counties. Tho creation of .small counties has been due to the spinelessness of past . Governments, which have yielded to local pressure' for no other reason tlmn to catch votes It is satisfactory to note that tho'present Government intends amalgamating ..some of these counties, and thus saving the taxpayers a considerable annual expenditure upon administration.
