A Pongaroa correspondent writes:--•"Thee ngagement is announced of " Miss Bmilv Geraldine Rattray, eldest daughter of Rev. James Rattray, of Pongaroa, to Mr Frank A. Meech, tliird son of Mr A. Meech, of Pongaroa The wedding will take place at an ■early date at Pongaroa." Mrs H. 1. Jones, one of the oldest Wanganui settlers, and widow of the founder of the well known firm of H. T. Jones and Son, died on Monday after a brief illness. The deceased lady, who was 84 years of age, practically saw Wanganui grow up, and .had a large fund of reminiscences of the early days. The Hon John Bryce, one of Wangamii's most distinguished pioneers, it- dangerously ill. Some twelve days ago Mr Bryce, who had been in failin" health for some time, sustained a stroke, and since then he has been growing more and more enfeebled. ■ « His end is daily expected. The Hon. John Bryce played an important part in the Maori War, and in the early politics of the country. He was a ' -prominent member of the Atkinson . Ministry. ■ ■ It is reported that Captain CharleH. Kempson, of the• "White Star liner Athenie, and one of the best known and most popular commanders in the Shaw Savill passenger service, is ab<>ut to retire from his active sea-going career. He is at present in New Zealand waters in what is understood to .bo his last voyage. Stephenson, vicar :>f Potone, was married at Feathorston oh Tuesday to Miss Enid Matthews, daughter of Mr Alfred. Matthews, of Waiorongomai. The Veh. Archdeacon Harper was the officiating clergyman. Miss Muriel Fenwick, of Featheihton, acted as bridesmaid. The Rev. Charles Palmer, vicar of Shannon, uas ... best man. and Mr E. Stephenson, brother of the bridegroom, was groomsman. A reception was subsequently 4eld in the Feathorston Hall, when a laTge number of gue'sts were present.
