FIERCE GALE
- IN GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND.
(Received January 13, 8.35 a.m.) LONDON, January 12. A violent gale and heavy snow in i the North of England have interrupted, telegraphs and railways. There are snowdrifts many feet deep. A blizzard' in the South of Scotland was the worst for years. Work had to be suspended at the / shipyards. A Dutch schooner was wrecked at. Carnoustie, on the east coast' of Scotland. The crew of six were gradually swept away. The captain lashed himself to the rigging, and was re- ' scued'after twelve hours.
Steamers were. wrecked, at Yarmouth and Blyth, the crews being saved after terrible experiences.
Many small craft are ashore. Tho loss of life is serious. There' liave been floods in Glamorgan, Wales, and South Tipperary. Forty acres of bog near Castlereagh, Ireland, slipped. It threatened the hamlet.
During a hurricane in the South , Ireland, several houses were blown down at Quoenstown.
