PACIFIC DEFENCE.
i A good deal of speculation has been ' aroused-by the cable published in our issue of Monday to the effect that the Prime Minister is in communication with the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and the Admiralty, and that an important change in naval policy will shortly he announced, enabling a scheme of co-operative defence in the Pacific to be brought into operation sooner than was expected. We can hardly believe that the Prime Minister is doing more than seeking the opinion of the Secretary of State and the Admiralty upon the subject. It is exceedingly improbable that Mr Massey would announce a. change in naval policy before he has consulted ■Parliament upon the question. At the present time we are contributing an annual sum towards the maintenance of the navy. The chances are that the Government will make proposals to Parliament for co-oncM-atlon with the Commonwealth in the matter of defence.
