AMATEUR ATHLETICS
EVENING EVENTS. The evening runs of the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club wore continued ,on the Park Oval last evening, when two events, over 220 yds and 880 yds, wore got off. Tlie weather was delightful, and a large number of spectators witnessed the sport, which was of a most interesting character. The 220 yds handicap brought out a good field, and tho raee wa« ran in two heats, the first falling to A. O. Bowman, and the second to Vesty. The final was also won by Vesty, who from 20yds, made a runaway race of it. The half-mile event brought out a field of eleven starters, and after an interesting race J. Bradbury, from scratch, won handsomely in the excellent time of 2min, a really splendid performance for which the "veteran" was heartily congratulated. The results were as follow: 220 YARDS HANDICAP. First Heat. A. C. Bowman (20yds) ... 1 R. Messenger (Bvds) / 2 M. Iggulden'(lßyds) 3 Won by two yards. Time. 22 2-ssec. Second Heat. J. Vestv (20yds) f W. Land (20vds) 2 G. B. Brunton (18yds) ... 3 Won bv six vards. Time. 23sec. Final. J. Vestv 1 W. Land 2 R. Messenger 3 Won easily. Time. 22 2-^sec. 880 YARDS HANDICAP. J. Bradburv (sor) 1 O. La Roche (70vds) 2 R. MoKon/ie (50yds) 3 Won easily by six yards. Time, 2 min.
SWIMMING. The Wairarn.ua Amateur Swimming Club held a hundred yards handicap in the Park Lake last evening, for a handsome troohy presented by Mr Noble Campbell. Tho race was one of the most interesting held this season, and was keenly contested right to the tapes. There were ten competitors, and a considerable number of interested spectators was also present, and showed their appreciation of the excellent snort nrovided by vigorously anplaudinsr tho winner. The enthusiasm which hai<! of late been sho' v n in swimminer circles augurs well for the Club's, carnival on Anniversary Day. The officials are to b?' congratulated on the .support ivhioh has' attended their efforts to create enthusiasm in one of the most valuable recreations we have.
