LOCAL AND GENERAL

To-morrow being; Xew Year's Day, there will be 110 publication of the ! Wairarapa Age. The latest dredging returns before closing down for the holidays are,' Masterton dredge 17oz, 4dwt, for 142 hours, and Success dredge 4ooz, ldwt for 219 hours. Mr. W. Cameron, who is at present on a holiday trip to Waipawa, sent through b- post yesterday, to a Masterton friend, a splendid! trout, which turned the scale at 41b. ' ' i Two Masterton young men came to' grief the other day while motorcycling. One was rather badly bruised, and' has been confined to his bed for several days. The second escaped with a'few scratches. E>uring the month of December two bankruptcies were recorded in the Wairarapa, as against one in December, 191 i. For the year the number of bankruptcies was thirteen, as compared with eighteen last year. There was only one bankruptcy in Masterton this year. ! .■ " The matron of the Masterton Hospital acknowledges with thanks, donations from the following:—'Mrs Coradine, Toys and jam ; Mrs Price, fruit, etc.; W. H. and) C. Oole, books, toys and fruit; Mrs Scharn weber, old linen, flowers, and home made bread; Mr Robinson, apples, Levin and Co, and Perry anid Co., > almonds, muscatels and figs; Hollo way and Son, lamb; Mr Kong Fong, lamb; Mr Alpass, cakes. At yesterday's meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Cha-ritable Aid Board, a Jetter was read from Dr Herbert Chesson, District Heajti Officer, stating that he had inspected the Lansdowne water supply, and had made a recommendation to the County Council as to the steps-to be taken to improve the existing , conditions. He. stated j that the work had been unavoidably iheld up, owing to there being three vacancies in the Hospital Committee. The work would be attended to as soon as the vacancies were'Jilled.

A new, experience befel iß.iverton oil Tuesday evening in the shape .'of a breaid famine (says the Southland Times). It seems that the local demand, in, view of" the holidays, had heei) very large, and when to this i was added the demand from somehundreds of lioliay trippers, the supply, simply gave out. ,Late comers paraded the streets in. the • evening, visiting all ,the likelv shops, in the hope of picking up some of ..the. staff of life. However, bakers, growers, and confectioners were out of that commodity, and substitutes for bread, in the shape, r.f biscuits, buns and cakes had to be purchased.

To-morrow being New Year's Day townspeople will;be looking around for the best means of .spending the 'holiday. The two chief attractions are the Caledonian Society's Sports on the Park Oval, and the' Wairarapa . Racing Club's summer meeting at Tauherenikau. At ,the( former gathering there is- sure to be a record attendance,'as-some of the Dominion's finest athletic talent are Veilgaged, and apart from this, there is no better way of spending an afternoon than in the «Hady groves of beautiful park.' A large crowd will, no doubt, prefer the more exciting .sport of trviiur to select winners at Tauherenikau, which, bv the '>av. is recognised as one of the beauty spots of the Dominion. Marian Willis, 2 years of age, who .was reported as missing from j'23 Ashmore Street, Erskinville, Sydney, has been fouivd. She strayed away on a Monday afternoon, and although a search party was out all night- she, could not be found, inor could any information be obtained about her. Next afternoon a resident of Itedfern was surprised to see a folorn little figure climbing painfully up the steps to her house, and calling, ' 'Me wanl mummy. Me hungry." The child was carried inside, and at once made itself at home in the -new surroundings. In the meantime the ,search was nersevered with. and by degrees the child, was traced to a spot in Redfer n, quite two miles from Ashmore Street. The ' wanderer . was eventually found, just as the woman who had taken charge of it was leaving her house to give information to the police. Wonder is expressed that a two year oldi -habr coiild ramble tho streets,of .such densely populated suburbs without attracting attention, and without coming to any harm. The child apparently. Avas not affected by her experiences and appeared: -to have found a comfortable sleeping place on Monday night, judging by. her fresh , appearance when found.

Wagg, J.'sl\, Frederick Rae was charged with having used obscene language in Park Street, 1 Masterton, on Saturday night, and was fined 20s. . The following circular has been received by the Wairarapa Hospital and. , Charitable Aid Board from Dr Yalintine, Inspector General of Hospitals* in; reference to the free training of; midwives, the question of which lias been. before t : he Health Department for some time, and drawing tdie Board's, attention, to th.o- advisability of tho following:—(1) 'Defining in what localities of your district such nxu.se* : : are to serve their two years under your Board, when they have received their training. ' (2) Making arrangements, either as regards ' guarantee, \ subsidy*, or salary, ira the case v of=>'• those nurses stationed in. districts where there is not sufficient scope to enable them to obtain a fair remun-y eration for their work. I make these suggestions, as 'it has come to my notice that, though Boards ihave taken advantage of the Department's offer, to train pupils considered specially suitable by the former, some Boards have taken no further responsibility as regards .-placing midwives trained: under these conditions in localities where their services are needed, and offering them any, inducement to stay there. ■ . .
