WOMEN AND WIRELESS.

The United States Government has passed a law making it compulsory for passenger steamers to carry two wireless operators, &o that messages may be received or' transmitted at any time of might or day. The Commissioner of Navigation lhais gone fur- j ther and announced that women must' be given, equal treatment to tliat received by men in occupying these posi- ' tion, as, he states, women make excellent operators. This .argument . may be right or it may not be, but it is at least open to doubt whether member® of the fair sex would make a;, "mable operators as men. In the now historical Titanic disaster the operators came in for very high commendation for the snlendid and heroic ' manner in whicih they stuck to their task, not knowing w'hat moment was to be tlieir last. Now women aire naturally not of such strong constitution, and are imic'h more liable'to break down tinder any great strain, such as wire-, lesg operators are sometimes r under, and for this reason. at least ' r -uld not be classed in .the samp ■«ategory a« their stronger brothers. Women/have so far figured only as stewardesses on board ship, and in this .capacity'-they have done excellent work .nnd ha.rp on mianv occasions ■shown great fortitude, but as for being v ' eauallv qualifier! with mem to act a? w? re-less operators remains to be proved. ,
