A TRAM SMASH
EXCITEMENT IN SYDNEY. FOURTEEN PERSONS INJURED. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, December 9" A tram smash caused a tremendou * sensation in the centre of the city on Saturday afternoon. A car was mounting the hill in King street, when the brakes failed, and it ran back and daS'hed across Caistlereagh and Pint streets.' colliding with a' car behind near George street. The spectacle of a car running on the wrong line furiously, with some passengers looking anxiotifily from the doors, others jumping, and women screaming attracted the attention, of hundreds' of people in the crowded streets. ;W'hen the runaway crossed Casfclereagh street, the crowd ran after it as thoiKill joining in a chase. Warning shouts enabled the driver of the car at the intersection of Pitt, street to stop in time to avoid a right-angle collisioin. The .runaway bad its ironwork twisted badly and the woodwork smashed to splinters. Tlie damage being so extensive, it Js surprising that no fatalities occurred. Fourteen pa-seengers were sent to the hospital.
