GERMAN MEAT TRADE.

Tiie meat famine in Germany presents great 'possibilities to Australia, -and is of great interest to stockowners at present. Tlio meat when imparted into Germany, besides complying with the German inspection law, is subjoct to a duty of 2.18 d per -English pound. Some months ago an experimental consignment of fifty carcases of Australian mutton was sent to Chemnitz, in Saxony,, but the reports which appoarod in the papers suggested that it did not please the palates 'of the population of that town, and a.s nothing more was heard of further shipments it was assumed that the trial had Ivoen a failure. Tt appears, however, that tflio shippers were able to -dispose of t-bo meat, at Id per pound loss than the rate prevailing for nat-iyo mutton. It is stated that cold storage of adequate capacity to accommodate the quantities of frozen mutton a'hi eh it is proposed to import already exists in Hamburg, Berlin, and certain other largo German towns. This enterprise threatens little short of a. revolution in the German meat trade; for during the whole of last year there were imported only 1,227'1ive sheep and 221 tons of mutton.
