THE OTIRA TUNNEL.
A section of the newspaper press in New Zealand is denouncing the Government in strong terms for itw decision to take over the contract for the Otira tunnel and continue the work until a fresh contract is let. In fairness to the Government it must bo stated that this course was recommended by the Committeo of the House to which tho subject was referred. Tli© faofc'is that previous Governments have expended so much money on thia line that it is imperative that it ba completed. The Otira tunnel will he a, veritable sink for public money. It is exceedingly improbable that any private contractors will be fthuid to take a contract for its completion, and the responsibility (fill thus 'fall entirely upon tl* SK iH & business
altogether; but the country has a big bill to pay for the political extravagances of previous administrations.
