Jan. 1 and 2.—Wairarapa Racing Club summer. Jan. 1 and 2.—-Stratford Racing Club annual. Acceptances for all events to be run at the Wairarapa Racing Club's S\\mImer meeting are due on Monday, with the secretary. Mr A. E. Laery, Featherston. Excellent acceptances have been received for Auckland, Marton and Taratahi. At the latter place the no- j munitions wore not.large, so that, big fields were not to be expected. Tt is gratifying that the majority of the best 'performed horses have stood their ground. An enjoyable day's sport should be assured, and being the only meeting of importance in the Wellington province, there is sure to be a big attendance of the public. Tiro splendid nominations received for the Wellington Cup meeting include all the crack performers of the Dominion. Bobrikoff figures as one of the first favourite? for the Auckland Cup. F Davis is verv sanguine regarding- the black champion's chances. If the Finland gelding strikes form the big northern event should be in his keeping. The "touts" at TCHor.sh'e are greatly impressed with his appearance, from which it would seem that his trainer has civon him a lot of work sinco the New Zealand Cup
meeting. Old Jolly Friar figures amongst the entries at some of the small meetings in Southland. Tt is a good many yearg isince Jolly Friar raced in the Wairarapa, and must be approaching the pension list. Lady Volley figures in the sprint events at the Porangahau annual fixture. With the moderate company opposed to her. J. Cress's cast-off should score a long overdue win. Sir ■ Knox and Otter will start at the Taratahi fixture, after which it is | probable the former will be taken on the Marton for the Marton Cup, in which the Sir Laddo horse is handicapped at Bst 91b. The tracks at Opaki have been very hard during the past week or two, and rain is much needed. Several of the horses in work there are beginning to show pigns of soreness. 'Nothing is going better at Opaki than Sir Solo. Garrett ha.s the Sir Laddo horse in great buckle at present, and if a. good horseman can bo secured for him, he will take a power of beating in the Manawatu Cup. in which he has the handy impost of 7st 91b. Congiska. in the rame. is striding out ve.n- freely, and will make his first appearance with the colours rip at Taratahi on Boxing Day. Operation has improved greatly, and should run well during the Xnias meetings. Ladino is very sore, and may not be -seen at his best at Taratahi, unless wo have some rain. I . The successful light-weight R.
Berry heads the list of winning; jockeys," with L. Wilson and B. Doeley close up. The former has numerous engagements during the Christmas meetings, imd should further a.dd to his list of victories. There Is every likolihood of there lieing a dearth' of riders during the holiday meetings, and owners will have a hard job to secure capable horsemen. The appointment of two additional ■stipendiary stewards is announced by the Racing. Conference. The completed list now is: Messrs John McMahon (chief), of Sydney; A; W. Gordon, Auckland, and "Dudley W. Gibson, of Kuradoo, New South Wales. It seems rather extraordinary that the conference found, it necessary to go to New South Wales for two of the three stewards appointed. There should have been no great difficulty in finding at lea,st two men, in the Dominion fit to fill the bill. It is probable that the new officials will tako up their duties during the Christmas meetings. Tlie many Masterton friends of Maurice McGrath will be pleased to learn of his recent success, with Puaj ka, the horse which he took from I New Zealand a year ago. McGrath seems likely to be as successful in Australia as he was in New Zealand.
