NAVAL DEFENCE
WHY THE GOVK.UNMENT IS SILENT. (By Teleg-raph — l'ress Association.) AUCKLAND, Laet Night. Speaking at a meeting of the Women's Reform League on the question of defence, the Hon. F, M. B. Fisher, said the Government had been blamed because it made no declaration of its policy. The circumstances preceding rts», entry into office must be considered. When Sir Joseph Ward and Sir John Findlay attended tb© subsidiary Defence Conference, they received confidential information none of which was committed to writing. They returned sworn to secrecy, and when the Government went out of office it could not impart any of its knowledge on this matter to its successors. The Government was' thoroughly capable of devising a naval defence policy; but. as Imperialist's they 'cnnsrderefl it unwise ,to originate any scheme . without first loarninsc the intentions of the Imperial Government. Everv four years the great American Republic is violently stirred by politics through the olection of a President. America has just passed through such a political upheaval, and has electod Dr Woodrow Wilson president of the United States. Those wh» elect Crescent Tea for the family inr.
