SCENE IN COURT
MK HOLLIES A'SD MR ETON. AN APOLOtiY DEMANDED. There was a somewhat lively interlude at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Maisterto.il yesterday afternoon. H,r E. ii. Eton, Chairman of the Wairarapa • Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, was under cross-examination by Mr Hollings concerning the treatment of Sister Mackay. 'Mr Hollings asked: Do you really think this woman has been given justice? . Mr Eton: I do. Mr Hollings:: You are a Justice of the Peace. Would you treat a prisoner in the way this 5 woman lias been treated? Mr Eton.: Sister Mackay is not a prisoner! Mr Ballings:: Have you ever given this woman an opportunity of appearing before the Board and defending herself? Mr Eton,: No! Mr Hollings: If that is so, I do not consider you a fit person to be a Justice of the Peace. Mr Eton (thumping the. side of the box): I object to that relnark! It is uncalled; for! I demand an apol°gy-' , .. His Worship: I do not think it a proper remark. Mr Eton (excitedly): I demand the protection of the Court, Your Worship. I ask for an apology! His Worship: Counsel lias no right to make such a reference to the witness. We are not considering the question of the action of the witness as a Justice of the Peace. Mr Eton: I demand an apology! I insist upon it! Mr Hollings: I had no desire to reflect upon Mr Eton as a .Tustice of the Peace. Mhe considers 1 have done so, I withdraw the remark. _ J leave the evidence to speak for itself. . , . Mr Eton: That is not an apology! I demand an apology! Hia, Worship assured Mr Eton, that the remade, which was quite uncalled for, ftad been withdrawn, andl he could be satisfied that there was no intention to reflect upon l«m as a Justice of the Peace. | Mr Eton, (leaving the box) : t very | well, Your Worship, I am satisfied^;
