ATHLETIC NOTES
(By the "Spectator.") Tho running season is now in full swing, and athletes in the Wairarapa in. view of the Christmas meetings, in view of tho Christmas mcotnLgs. TJio first big meeting 0 f tJie season will bo held under the auspices of the Wairarapa. Amateur Athletic Club, on Boxing Day. when a record meeting i« assured. The popular Secretary, and official handicapper (Mr W. 9. L. Dickson) with his strong working committee, have all arrangements well in hand and are doing everything in their power to ensure a good day's sport, both for tho public and the competitors. Tho entries received comprise the largest number ever received by an Athletic club in the district and easily surpass all previous nominations of this club. Among the competitors will bo such good performers as A. T. "Duncan, (who is considered by ep'ticM to be the coming Amateur champion of Now Zealand), also TJ, Messenger, E. McTvenzie, and E. E. Fisher, the pick of the Wairarapa club.
On Boxing Day the 31st Annual Meeting of thp Mauriceville Sports Club will ho held. An excellent programme has been arranged, including the. Mauriceville Handicap of £lB 10s. The programme, also includes Jumping, Wro«Ming. Chopping, sawing, and numerous Horse events, ajso childrens' items. Entrios close with the joint, secretaries. Messrs M. O'Brien, and J. Bamett, to-day. Handicaps will be declared in tho columns of this paper in a few davs time.
The Martinborough Caledonian Society will hold their popular meeting on the Martinborough Racecourse on Boxing Day. As in former years, largo prize "moneys are offered for the Kumiihg, Dancing, Pipinrr, arid Horf?P events. Programmes may he procured from Mr F. McAllum. honorary secretary.
The Pongaroa district will be well catered for on Boxing Day by the Pongaroa Athletic. Society, large entries for which are now being received hy the Mr Geo. W. West. A special Silver Cup (to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals) will be donated by Mr J. D. Milnor, of Pongaroa, to the winner of the Open Chop Handicap.
The official handieapper to the Wairarapa Athletic Union (Mr W. J. White) ha? issued the handicaps for the Mangataiuoka Athletic Society. The nominations constitute a record. Interest will be added to this meeting by tho presence of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society's Pipe Band.
Handicaps have also been declared for tlio "Bk" meeting in Masterton on New Year's Day. The professional runners appear to be of very high order, the cratch men in the. sprint [events bein K L. Alzdorf and A. Bold, | two good performers. The 300 Yards 1 Handicap should provide an exciting race, and a exeat finish may he anticipated. The handicaps for the Amateur events will be published this "iveek.
