Dr and Mrs Johnson, of Martinborottgh, were on a visit to Masterton yesterday. Mr J. C. Ousack. secretary of the (Wellington Wednesday Cricket Association, is at present in Masterton.. Mr T. W. Watts, formerly licensee of the Post Office Hotel, Pahiatua, will shortly take over the Empire Hotel, at Christ-church. At last evening's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, leave of absence was granted to the Town Clerk (Mr James Archer) from January 2nd -to 13th. Councillor Baragwanath, the Mayor of South Melbourne, and President of the South Melbourne Cricket Club, is accompanying the team which arrived in Masterton last evening. He is also a keen cricketer. | Mr John Payne, M.P., informs us that there is no truth in the statement that ho intends contesting the Napier .seat at the next general election. His present intentions are to stick to Groy Lynn. Passengers by the Makura included Captain Shaw, A.D.C., who joins tho •Governor here; also the members of the Australian football team, which recently toured America. I Mr Peter Bowline, the mining agitator, who visited Masterton a year or two back, has intimated his intention of contesting a seat in the Federal Senate on the Independent Labour ticket. Mrs C. Matthews, a resident of I i'eilding for 29 years, died on Saturday. Deceased was the mother of Mr Leo. Matthews, one of the contingent from Feilding for South Africa, I who fell im tho war.
The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs McKenna. wife of tho Jate:Mr E. McKenna, V.C. The deceased was a well known Palmerston lady, who in the earlier days of tho town's history, took a very prominent part in public affairs, especially in matters connected with charity. Yesterday was tho last occasion on "which Mr A. D. Thomson presided over the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston, prior to the assumption of lia duties as Civil Service Commissioner. Members of the local bar presented him with a solid 'silver salvor. By the death of Mr .lames Signal, who passed away at jhis homo at Wanganui on Saturday, Wanganui lases another of her old and respected residents. The deceased', who had reached tho ripe ago of seventy-four years, had resided in Wanganui for many years. Mr R. Darroch. formerly of Masiterton, but now heachn&ster of the I Rosneath school (Wellington)) ha.s i been appointed joint honorary seoretnrv. with Mr Cecil E'nlmer. of the Wellington branch of the Navy League.
