The Kov. J. W. Burton, formerly of Masterton, but now of .New Plymouth, is opposed to the Bible in 'Schools movement. On> Sunday evening he delivered an address in' the Methodist Church, entitled. "Why we should Oppose the Platform o'f the Bible in I State Schools League."

The death is announced from London of Mi- WJiitelaw Reid, the United States Ambassador, at the age of seventy-five years. Deceased was a famed American journalist and diplomatist, and was oi purely Scottish descent. His father was the son of a Covenanter who emigrated from Scotland to America. Adjutant Charles Dawkins, representing Commissioner' Richards, of the Salvation Army, arrived in Masterton from Dannevirke on Saturday. Adjutant Dawkins will remain in Masterton for about a week, wn dduring his stay he will interview prominent residents of the town and district, in the interests of the Booth Memorial Fiwid. The adjutant met with considerable success in the Dannevirke town and district.
