AMUSEMENTS

BARTON'S CIRCUS. 'A BIG ENTERPRISE. Barton Bros.' circus made their I third annual appearance to a large audience last evening in tho big tent erected in Queen street. A circus entertainment seems to possess some indescribable attraction to amusement lovers. On tho occasion of its last visit to Mastorton tho circus was thoroughly enjojod by all who witnessed it. Since then Mr F. J. Barton has returned to New Zealand from a tour in search' of fresh attractions, and so successful was his quest, that n groat improvement has been effected even upon its former excellent showing. Tho enterprise arrived in Masterton yesterday morning, and created much interest as the long convoy of waggons and horses paraded tho streets to the site of the entertainment. As circus proprietors the Barton Brothers have gained a reputation which they may well bo proud of, and last evening's programme was one that left nothing to be desired. The applause was hearty, frequent, and spontaneous, and at tho conclusion, as the audience troonod out, expressions of r.pproval and delight could be heard on ( all sides. From start to finish there I wa.s not a dull moment, and the plea- J sure of the evening was enhanced bv ithe courtesy shown to natrons bv the little army of attendants. Little Lindsav and Miss Babcrino, a duo of contortionists, gave a remarkable demonstration, and left one wondering whether they were boneless or ordinarily constructed atoms e,f human-! itv. The Alton Ti;io of burlesque Chinese acrobats established themselves warm favourites. Miss Mena Va!, a ladv stockwhip manipulator and trick cyeliste, performed some trulv marvellous feats in her dual capacity. Her ambidexterous ability places her in the front .rank of star performers. Electric Theatre will bring the opening of the double-bill season, which includes two 3000 feet photo-plays, each one of which is a speciality in its own way. ."Nursing a Viper" is a very fine conception, and it magnificently staged and set. A certain portion recalls very vividly that old.favourite "East Lvnne." In the big drama, "A Leap to Death," we have a sensational acrobatic feat, which is very Averting, and brings one into direct contact with the highly-trained professionals who nightlv perform their hazardous feats for the gratification of their patron* of the European Continent. It ,s worthy of note that the people performing such feats as that seen m "Leap to Death" are usually either Swedes or Danes, both these people scemin. to excel in the exhibitor, act and some remarkably clever turns are rendered by them from time to time. Tho next prom.nent item on the programme is a photn-pla> after (be celebrated poem and "Jim Bludso," which it willhemcmmherod, «** written Ivy Mr John Hay.Secreta.i.-ofStatWo^helin,-ted States of America. This is a very exciting picture, especially « the-one where the ferry beat is takt fire and Jim Bludso >* stand mg bis engines amicl*t fl«mo _ smoke, until the Praine Bel ha nm her nose aground, and so ,alio* a Iter passengers to escape to shore fiom So burning vessel. The other dramas are an eaneciallv well-chosen lot. Tlev are: "After Many Years and "TnthoNorth Woods." The later ■» n oieture which will appeal to all lo ers of scenic films, some pf the «ood land scenerv being exquisite I> e Ea/lUfKerU" is a very pretty «cen,o studv. Tho eomedv -section w.well ,ustained in "Tweedledum Cycles.

"A Search for Footwear," "Their Fat:i Sealed," and "Jim, the Boxer." The complete program mo is nearly 12.000 feet in length, or almost twice the length of programmes usually 't':;nvn. A wonderful improvement has been effected in tho perfection by tho new chrystalline lens, brought down by Mr J. Payne, and with this lens Mr F. Steel has been specially brought to Masterton, as he hatf operated this optical invention at Napier, during the experimentary trials which Messrs Thompson and Payne have been conducting for some time Ofij't. The lens has been awarded a first-class certificate at Kew, as being entirely free from zonal and chromatic aberraction. The effects gained by the chrystalline lens are extreme brilliancy and wonderful stereoscopic qualifier.'. Mr F. Steel will remain permanently in Masterton. the firm intending to transfer Mr Harrison to Napier. This afternoon "A Leap to Death" will be shown at the children's matinee, at 2.30 o'clock, and a bigprogramme of choice films will accompany this great photo-drama. Mr R. Boyes' orchestra has specially rehearsed the music accompanying to-night's double-bill change. . TOWN HALL PICTURES. At the Town Hall to-night one of 'the most complete pictures of Western American, life will be shown. The film is 3000 feet long, and commences with a view of the cowboys leaving for the cattle round-up. Then we are shown the big mob of -10,000 longhorns being brought in/and it is a most magnificent sight. The routine work of a big ranch is gone through, such as branding, lassooing and catching wild horses, and then we. see the cowboys at play. The cowgirls also take a hand in the sports, and m some items are. as clessr as the men. Tho bronco busting is the greatest exhibition of buokjumping which could possibly bo seen. The Indians also gave an exhibition of tribal warfaro 'and riding, at which the Redskins are clever". The picture -is sure to draw crowded houses. Among the other items is the Funeral of Father Venning, showing Wellington's record crowd of 3-5,000 people, which assembled to pay their respects to a man popular among all classes. The other items are all stars, particularlv the exclusive A.B. «"nedy. So Near and Yet so Far. Wo also state for the benefit, of the ohildron. we will screen Tho Fall Round Up this afternoon.
