THE POISONING CASE.
The poisoning case which is at present occupying the Court dn Calcutta, hritiga to mind the celebrated. Hall case, which created a profound sensation in New Zealand just a- quarteof a century ago. The circumstinres surrounding the Cla.rk case, in India, :iro almo?.:; identical with those which were revealed in the Hal] case nt Timaru in 1887. Thomas Hall, a well-connected resident of the southern township, was indicted for attempting to murder his wife by administering poison to her. During the trial, it transpired that Captain Caine, father of Mrs Hall, had died under suspicious circumstances. Hki Ikklv was exhumed, and was found to contain a large quantity of arsenic. Hall stood his trial for murder and was convicted. The death sentence imposed upon him was afterwards commuted to imprisonment for life. Detective Kirby, who took a prominent part in the case, was himself subsequently sent to gaol, after j making a sensational escape from the ! Dominion!
