AM) HOSPITAL BEDS

At the meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, a letter way received from Mr P. iVKogan, Secretary of the Wairarapa Friendly Societies asking upon what terms a .-••peeial l>ed for the use of Friendly Societies could bo obtained at the Masterton Hospital, The Secretary stated that the Inspector General had estimated the cost at £ll6 per annum. It was pointed out that applications for beds at Grey town and Pahiatua had been refused, Mr Bennett moved that the application, for a bed be granted on the payment of £IOO per year. ( ■Mr Herbert seconded the resolution, and expressed the opinion that the Friendly Societies should be. encouraged. He bought th/ 5 proposal a good one for the Board. Mr B. F. Beetham opposed the resolution, on the ground that similar requests might be made, and there would bo no knowing where the thing might end. Mr McLeod said if they granted the, application from the 'Friendly Societies, they might have similar requests from the Farmers' Union and the Federation .of Labour. (Laughter).

After further discussion, the resolution was put .and lost hy twelve votes to four, and it was decided to inform the Friendly Societies'' Council that the Board cannot see its way clear to entertain the proposal.
