TIMARU WATERSIDERS

SITUATION UNCHANGED

(By Telegraph —Press Association.)

TIMARU, Last Night. There was been a good deal of discussion in regard to the waterside strike to-day. but there is no change in, the situation. The Unionists declare that the two men. who are the subject of the dispute were supported by tho Union in getting a rise in wages in February, and can see no objection to their being members of the Waterside Union as well as the Railway Society. These two men are not "permanent" railway "hands, but casuals. If they were permanents, the Union would not have objected to them. . Mr Stringeman, district traffic manager, came down from Christolmreh. to-day. In reply to a .suggestion that tho two men should be made permanents, he said this was impossible, as tlioy were over the ago limit. The Department, he said, did not intend to interfere in the matter at present. The waterside agreement, j that perference to be given to TJnion- . ists, had nothing to do with the De- ' partment, and wa.a only binding on tho shipping people. I The Union'a secretary went to Lyttelton 'to-day. 1 In consequence of tho strike tho j Union S.S. Company has cancelled all advertisements of boats calling here.
