THE BOROUGH GAS

AND POWER SUPPLIES.

Mr J. W. Blackman, manager of the Masterton Municipal gasworks, reported ay follows at last night's meeting of tho Borough Council: "I beg leave to bring under your notice the question as to whether or not some charge should be made to those customers who are using town ga* purely as a stand-by for power purposes, in case anything goes wrong with their gas engines*, which ordinarily are run on producer gas. The position, so far as the gas depai-tment is concerned, is that there are large meters ami service pipes of sufficient diameter laid and fixed - practically at the expense of the borough, from which but 'little revenue is being received. In the case of one of the largest producer engines so supplied, the average consumption of gas for the seven months ending October 31st was 1800 c.f. per month, which at 5s per 1000 bring in 9s. I wonld recommend that in all eases'where producer engines are installed," and the town gas equipment is simply used as a stand-by convenience, a charge of os per month be made, in addition to the value of gas consumed, and that the prico of gas so consumed be charged -at tho ordinary lighting rate." —The recommendation Ayas adopted as from January Ist.
