The Premier loft Auckland for Wellington by the mid-day train yesterday.

Mr A. H. Pollock, stationmaster at Hastings, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington.

It is Dr Baud, formerly of Masterton, who has disposed of his Pahiatua practice to Dr Paterson, of Otaki, Dr Baird leaves shortly for Otago.

The death is announced from Havelock South of Mr W. P. Simmonds. J.P., son of the late. Mr William Simmonds who arrived at Nelson in 1842.

Mr T. Osborne, of Claroville, aged 95 years, took his constitutional walk into Carterton, this morning (says the News), a distance of .nearly three miles. He is still hale and keen, and takes a delight in gardening.

Mr L. Minifie, theological student, of Mastorton, was successful in his sormon examination at Auckland. He secured second place in preaching before the President of the General Conference afc Auckland, obtaining eight out of a possible ten marks. Ho -was congratulated by Jiis examiners.

An Auckland telegram states that Lord! and Lady Islington left for Sydney last night. They leave on Saturday next by the s.s. Osterley, Lord Islington going to India, and Lady Islington to England. Pending the arrival of Lord Liverpool, the Chief Justice will act as administrator of the Government. He will be sworn in at Wellington this morning.

On Saturday afternoon the ladies of Belvedere met together at the house of Mrs E. Eagle, jun., to bid' farewell to Mrs Cheshire, an old and respected -resident of tho district, who is leaving for Auckland to reside with 'her daughter, Mrs Boocher. Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, which was beautifully decorated with sweet peas and lycopodium.

Regarding the reported resignation of the Secretary to the Treasury, the Minister for Finance said at Dunedin : "Mr Poynton has been very ill; there can be no question about that, and 3ie has been medically examined. T don't think he can continue'the hard work he has been given: in the office. The seclusion of office is not suited to liirn. It is quite possible there may he a change."

Tho remains of the late Mr Duncan McGregor, sen., were interred in the Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral cortege was large and representative, and included members and past members of nearly every local body in the district. The ceremony at the graveside was performed in an impressive manner by the Rev. A. T. Thompson 8.A., 8.D., who delivered a. brilliant panegyric on the deceased gentleman.
