MAKES A REQUEST.

(Received November 25,'8.40 a.m.) SYDNEY. November 25.

!- The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Mr Willis, has asked Mr .Wood (Acting-Leader of the Opposition) to cut- his motion down to a bare expression of want of confidence in himself-(Mr Willis). In reply to Mr Wood, who asked for an explanation, Mr Willis said that the motion should be cut down, because the first part was irrelevant to the issne.

The House finally agreed to take the motion as amended, the Speaker making a simple censure on himself.

PREMIER DEFENDS THE SPEAKER.

(Received This Morning, 12.25-o-dock) SYDNEY, November 25;

Mr Wood, in a two hours' speech,' attacked, the Government; for., failing to take a logical course, and clear up the matter of the Speaker's power. He claimed that the House should have the initiation and control of its own business.

• The Premier, in reply. defended Speaker Willis, and declared that he had no intention, of taking the business of the House out of tFe hands of the Government. • The Hon. Mr Hoi man moved the application of the closure to Mr Wood's :niot!on but the motion was negatived ,bv 34 votes to 32 3 being purely a party vote. '.
