"A LIBERAL" OPINION.
The Reform Party has been variously referred to by the extreme Opposition press as the lineal descendant of Toryism as the Conservative Party, and as the remnant of the "National Ass." It is refreshing, therefore, to find one of tho leading journals of the "Liberal" Party honest to itself and its readers. Tho Auckland Star, in a recent article, stated that th 6 reference to the Reform Party as identical in character and ideals with the old Conservative Party, is "hardly doing the Reformers justice." Mr -Massey, it says, "has paid the Liberals the highest possible compliment by passing enactments that are based upon precisely the political principles that provide the foundation of the democratic Liberalism of Grey and Ballance and Seddon." Tho Star will not call Mr Massey a true Liberal until he has been tried by time, but "for the time being much of the 'Reform' programme is certainly of a character •which Liberals can eonscientiousty. approve."
