LAWN TENNIS.
THE INTER-STATE CH AMPIONSHIPS. (Received Last Night, 11.5 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, November 22. Rain interferred with the tennis tournament to-day. It was cold and the courts were heavv.
In the singles Brookes forfeited to Ollivier, and Heath to Marsh, it being considered too severe a strain before the Cnp matches. Park beat Ollivier f>—l, 6—2. 6—3. Ollivier showed some brilliancy, but was never dangerous. Lowe beat Rice 11—9, 6—2, 6—2, Lowe's length throughout was superior, but. Rice put more weight into his strokes. Lowe's service was excellent-.', , His work on a heavy court indicated that the Britisher's chances are distinctly good if there are similar conditions in the Cup.
Tn the doubles, Beamish and Park beat Wright ftnd Jones, 6—!, 6—2, 2—6, 6—4. The winners proved themselves fine doublers. Beamish was effective in his return service, backhand, and smashing. Park was clever at driving, both in the return service and rallies. Both players were extremely clever at killing anything short. They broke down at the deeper lobs, but scored heavily in the short lobs. Their opponents were unable to find their length.
The finals will probably bo> placed tomorrow.
