BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mastor ton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, there being present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradino), Os H. J. O'Leary, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, E. Flanagan, W. Candy, J. C. Ewington, J. P. Prentice and A. Donald.

It was decided, in connection with an application from a ratepayer, to have rates remitted, that after taking into consideration the report of the Town Clerk, the Council could not see its way to make any reduction in the rates, and the full rates on the applicants property must be paid. Permission was granted to an applicant to erect a verandah in connection with his premises, provided the Council, retain the right to demand the removal of same at any time it may deem advisable .

A letter was rend from the Lvttelton 80-rough C-ouncil in answer to a letter from the Masterton Council in reference to the selling of coal by the Borough, asking reasons why the latter Council found it necessary to sell coal—Received.

In connection with the selling of coal from the municipal gas works, Cr Flana.gan asked how it wa# thathalf a ton of coal had been sold after a resolution was passed by the Council to stop the .selling of coal for a time.

The manager of the ga,s works said that he was not in a. position at the moment to explain, but lie would inquire into the matter and report at next meeting of the Council.

The report of the inspector of nuisances was read in. reference to the stoppage of the Kuripuni creek, and concerning which a number of complaints had been received. The report stated thai the cause of the trouble lay on a, proporty on the Opaki, which the stream in question passed through. Tho owner of the property had been ashed to clean the watercress from the but had failed to do <so. He was then given seven days in which to comply with the by b'ws, and in for modi that prosecution would follow unless the matter was attended to. Cr Temple did not agreo witihr this, and considered that the owner of the property be given notice to comply with the by-laws. The Mayor said that many owners of properties considered that tihey were not liable in a matter, of this kind. It should be known that the by-laws were very clearly defined, and owners were liable to prosecution for failing to comply with the regulations. It was decided that the property owner be requested to clear -the stream of all rubbish, and failing this steps be taken to compel the by-laws to be adhered to.

The report of the manager of the municipal gas works was read and

adopted, with tJie amendment that a temporary connection be made with Renal) Street, in place of the 4in main suggested in the report.
