I has occurred on tho railways. Perj rr-..-uaiiv we. luivc 3io trouble in 'this ro- ";-;■,•., ;i!:.! dr. not think there have L-. ■.;.». ca-es, anyhow. Once eggs n.'v n moved from the crates they are, is.-. .1 lucn a .'.1.-; remarked, "Liko Chfna.-:<-:>':i, haul lo trace." It .has boon suggested tho diiiieulty of prcvon- ' tiiKi of tampering could bo mot with ' b\ having binges and Jocks on tho . iTutcs, but this would bo too costly, ' uni'.'.v- :s:;iMiHsiu> can devise something drcidedly economical.
\Vi:h regard to delay in returned crates from Wellington, the railway officials at tho Masterton station are evidently doing their best to imjirovo :ii.::ttv:v, am! wherever the fault may lie, it doe:-; not appear to be at this end of the journey. Tho Auckland conference, which a while ago looked somewhat doubtful, haw become imbued with fresh vitality. Hi sides Mr Britain-Bull, the conv..u:i', "dos'-r.s vScott, Martin, and Jrvii>..- :ir,> acting on the Committee. A letter from the Convener states that a prolamine which is all l>u.siness bee.') sketched out, and that excursions can lie settled afterwards. 'Mr-; i:- ;\ii improvement on previous P.v.iitry Conferences, too much gadd-
ing about being in evidence. Tt has also ben! suggested that Mr BritainBun ac;, as Chairman. Messrs Davis (of .Napier) and Rutherford, (of Mastering) are to provide some of the items ch tho prgrammo. It is rumoured that another poultrykocpor in the district intends to throw upvthe sponge at the end of tho yea!" and employ his talent other-
WISO. It is ono of tlic facts of Economics that thriving businesses arc the parents of other minor industries, and an example of this may be seen at llr O'Leary's blacksmith shop. There a pomtryniau luis placed for sale bags cl : rliell grit, done up in .small parcel?.-, 'of six and twelve rounds each, nlii.']; r.valcc, them exceedingly convenient to handle, and should meet ■'vvi!h n ready demand. A poultry 'farmer late of Clarville built up, "'hen ti!?re, a very substantia! business by tho same method.
Mens, at present, in Wellington, a pp.".•■>;• tt be fetching a better price than ducks. Eggs have again hardened, a little.
Toe punches should be owned by every poultry keeper for marking his chickens with. They can he purchased for 2s each and their use' saves trouble in picking the birds out should they Jiappen to become mixed. Poultry papers, published in different parts of the world, are almost innumerable, but we think, in order of merit, the following •stand out on their own, as applied to New Zealand --"New Zealand Poultry Jour-
nal." "Australian Hen." Hlustrated P.'MiHry "Record," Feathered World", ■>■;■• i.l thn-.uvh placed Ipst. not neccssar-/ ily leasi, except in bulk, the "Agric- I ultural Journal" issued by the Gov-,' eminent of this country. ;
Before, placing fresh lots of birds into houses which have recently been in use, always thoroughly overhaul them for leakages, spray out well, a.nd renovate the ground floor. Just from now on and for the next few mouths houses are apt to become overcrowded on account of the young stock coming on and most of the old ones still on hand; and in addition this is the commencement of the general farmer's busy season and he feels frequently he cannot spare the time to attend to and let other matters, in his eyes, more important, wait. When this is the case, the obvious motto, is for the farmer to keep less birds and then, perhaps, lie never will need to InilF stifle them on a hot summer's night, by over-crowding.
