HON G. FOWLDS.

Wo do not agree with many tilings the Hon George Fowlds says and does. B-nt wo confess to a degree of admiration for the whole-souled manner in which ho has condemned the attempt that is being made to wreck our splendid system of secular education by the introduction of the religious element into our schools. His addross at Napier on Sunday afternoon last will go a lon pi way towards opening tho eyes of the Nonconformist Churches to the true position of affairs. Not only does Mr Fowlds strenuously oppose Bible reading in schools. Ho goes further and states that no refer, endum'on the subject should be taken. He holds that'matters touching the conscience do not come within the

scope, of tin* referenda, and ho pertinently asks, "Would the churches bo prepared to lake a referendum if they know that agnostics were in a majority?"
