DEATH OF "TOM BROWN."
OLD VICAR'S MEMORY OF A FAMOUS FIGHT. "SLOGGER" WILLIAM'S CLAIM. One of the most famous lights .recorded in fiet-ion is recalled by the recent death of the Rev. Augustus Orlehar, vi--ar of WiiJington, in R'-'d-fordshire, at 100 age of eighty-eight. Mr Orlehar was the original of Tom Brown in "Tom Brown's Schooldays," and the result of his tight at Rugby with "Slogger" "Williams as described in the ..story has been the subject of oodles,-, speculation. Judee Hughes, the author oi "Tom Brown's Schooldays," left the result of the ligh t onen. "The. Slogger," he says, has the-better at first,, but condition .t-c!k afterwards in favour of Tom. "The Slogger" is nut down for the thircl time, and both boys are on the knees of their seconds waiting for the signal to restart when Dr Arnold comes in and all i.s over. The fight, of course, actuilly took place at Rugby. The combatants were the Rev Chancellor Bulkeloy Jones ("Slogger" Williams). Although he \va* undoubtedly the original of one of the contestants-, the Rev. Augustus Orb-bar was not drawn ''upon by Hughes for his hero in any other respect.
